ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions is proud to have collaborated with the talented team at INTRO Architecture on what promises to be a flagship development in the highly anticipated Wild Africa precinct at Monarto Safari Park, South Australia. This partnership has allowed us to contribute to the creation of a unique, immersive experience that reflects both our commitment to quality and the shared vision for this world-class project. Monarto Safari Park, already recognised as the world’s largest zoological park, is home to a diverse range of animals, including African lions, cheetahs, and both white and black rhinos. The park will soon welcome elephants, further cementing its status as a global conservation leader. The new Wild Africa Hotel, a safari park-themed resort, offers families a unique opportunity to experience the essence of Africa, all within the heart of South Australia. The Wild Africa Hotel is a three-story, mixed-use facility that encompasses 78 rooms and various amenities, including a restaurant, day spa, and pool deck. The design creates a space where guests can enjoy an intimate, tranquil experience, observing wildlife without the distractions of crowds. It provides an environment for reflection and connection with nature in a relaxed, serene setting.
Guests can enjoy authentic African cuisine, personalised safari experiences, natural water play areas, and access to the upcoming Monarto Zoo visitor centre and its attractions. The hotel’s design takes cues from African vernacular architecture, blending the natural colors, shapes, and textures of Africa’s landscapes. This theme is reflected in both the interior and exterior, fostering a seamless connection with the surrounding natural beauty. Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design process. With an emphasis on environmentally friendly materials, it was an easy choice to incorporate ASSA ABLOY’s Brass Core range. Brass, known for its recyclability and environmentally conscious qualities, aligns perfectly with the sustainable ethos of the project. This collaboration highlights ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions dedication to providing innovative, sustainable solutions for prominent projects. The Wild Africa Hotel at Monarto Safari Park is set to become a landmark development, offering guests a distinctive and enriching experience that showcases the beauty of African wildlife alongside the natural surroundings of South Australia.

Turtle Beach Resort, Gold Coast CASE STUDY
BACKGROUND Nestled on the sun-drenched Gold Coast, Turtle Beach Resort attracts a diverse clientele with its unique blend of tranquillity and vibrant community atmosphere. This popular family-friendly destination seamlessly combines permanent residences with short-term holiday rentals, a common feature in this part of Queensland. However, this mixed-use model presented a challenge: managing access control and security across the resort’s expansive facilities. The outdated locking system struggled to keep up with the evolving demands, proving unreliable, maintenance-intensive, and lacking the sophisticated features needed to ensure a smooth and secure experience for both residents and guests.
“The resort had a mix of permanent residents and holiday rentals, and their existing locks were failing frequently, leading to costly repairs and security concerns,” explains Nicholas Domartschuk, Business Development Manager - Wireless Locking Solutions with ASSA ABLOY. “They were looking for a system that could offer better control and longevity, and future-proof the facility.” CHALLENGE The new locking system needed to accommodate the resort’s unique mix of permanent and holiday accommodations by offering customisable access levels for various user groups, including residents, guests, staff, cleaners, and maintenance personnel. Ensuring security in common areas and secondary stairwells was also crucial to provide peace of mind for all occupants and employees.

“ The commercial software’s advanced features, like granting access to specific zones within the building, were crucial for managing access for both short-term guests and permanent residents.”
The resort also required a reliable, high-performing, and modern solution capable of operating even during power outages, and – to guarantee that all elements would function together flawlessly – it became essential that all system components be sourced from a single supplier. Plus, as a large resort with 400 units, all featuring apartment doors with latches and no key overrides, the resort was keen to avoid extensive modifications. “They’re all colonial-style doors with decorative routed squares,” Nicholas explains. “And installing mortise locks requires additional cutouts, which would compromise the door’s aesthetics and structural integrity.” Finally, due to the facility’s mixed-use nature, the installation needed to be carried out with minimal disruption to the resort’s daily operations. CASE STUDY Very Special Kids | Malvern
Completed in August 2023, Plan Group collaborated with ASSA ABLOY to enhance the accessibility and functionality of Victoria’s only children’s hospice, Very Special Kids House, located in Malvern VIC. This redevelopment project, led by Andrew Simpson Architects and Bamford Architects, aimed to create a vibrant and comforting environment for paediatric palliative care residents. Featuring soft play areas, bedrooms, music and art therapy spaces, outdoor courtyards, a wheelchair-accessible playground, a hydrotherapy pool, sensory rooms, and storage spaces for medical equipment, the hospice aims to provide comfort and
diversion for children facing life-limiting conditions. To ensure optimal accessibility for children of all abilities, the facility required an advanced door automation system. The goal was to allow residents to move around the hospice independently and comfortably, regardless of their physical capabilities. ASSA ABLOY provided a comprehensive door automation solution, comprising a total of 26 operators, including SL521 & SL500 sliding doors and SW200 swinging door models. The selection of ASSA ABLOY’s products was driven by their functionality, wide clear openings, and high-end design aesthetic.

SL521 operators were strategically installed to facilitate access for beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, and mobility equipment. The ADS-F System was chosen for its high-end design and clear aesthetic profiles, complementing the facility’s upscale fit-out. Mode switches, push buttons, sensors, and versatile remote controls (‘PentaFOBs’) were implemented to ensure ease of use for both children and caregivers. The installation of ASSA ABLOY’s door automation system has transformed the hospice into a welcoming and inclusive space. Children, families, caregivers, and medical staff can now navigate the facility with
ease, accessing essential amenities such as therapy rooms, the pool area, and the playground without barriers. The project has significantly enhanced the quality of life for residents and their families, providing them with independence, freedom, and peace of mind during challenging times. From AI-enabled gates to 3D printed hinges, D&D Technologies imagines what’s next in gate security

“ Within the next 10-20 years, 3D printing’s impact could be quite revolutionary,” says Richard. “Imagine 3D printed houses, custom medicines, and even food. It’s definitely a space to watch and one where we see great potential for our products as we move into the future.”
A moment of inspiration in 1988 — the invention of the MagnaLatch ® magnetic gate latch by D&D Technologies co-founder David Doyle — set a new industry benchmark for child safety around pools and in backyards. In its fourth decade of operation, D&D Technologies continues to lead the way, with an impressive string of innovations that have set new standards for the gate hardware industry, while picking up a slew of design awards along the way. As the company celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, D&D’s Group Product Development Manager, Richard Zitzelsperger, and R&D Manager, Scott Cosby reflect on current and emerging trends in the sector, and how the hardware products that keep people and properties safe might change in the years ahead. Sustainable materials and packaging The drive toward reducing waste and finding smarter, greener ways to develop and deliver products is not a new trend by any means, but it is one that will continue to shape manufacturing operations for many years to come. “One of the most obvious ways that change is being brought to bear is through responsible sourcing of materials,” says Richard. “A big part of that is about finding safer alternatives to some of the chemicals and processes that have typically been used in heavy manufacturing.” Another focus is on waste reduction, which D&D tackles through the durability of its products. “One of the big problems that countries all over the world are grappling with is landfill waste,” says Scott. “You particularly see this in categories like construction and fast fashion, where offcuts and unsold products just go into the bin and into landfill. It’s the same with cheap products that break after a few uses. “Being made from hard wearing materials like stainless steel and polymer, D&D products can last decades before they ever need replacing. By their very nature, they’re the opposite of cheap, disposable, and unsustainable.” 3D printing: The future of manufacturing D&D’s product team already uses 3D printing to create rapid prototypes during R&D. While the technology is currently used for low volume applications today, Richard and Scott see a future where 3D printing revolutionises manufacturing. In fact, current trends predict a future where 3D printing scales up for mass production, enabling products to be easily and quickly customised and for manufacturing operations to be decentralised.

Internet of Things (IoT) & AI: Smart security According to Richard, the future of AI-powered gate systems that recognise different people and grant or deny entry depending on access protocols, is already here. “You’re seeing this a bit now in apartment complexes where gate systems can recognise if you’re a resident or not, letting you into resident-only spaces like the gym or pool,” he explains. IoT-enabled gate systems can now also integrate with smart home ecosystems, allowing property owners to remotely monitor and control access points through their smartphones or voice assistants. Real-time alerts for gate activity, such as unauthorised access attempts or gate malfunctions, enable proactive responses to potential security threats. Other advances in AI include predictive data analysis from sensors embedded in gate hardware that will be able to identify when a gate latch or hinge is likely to need maintenance or repair. This means that potential issues can be addressed before they escalate into costly repairs or breakdowns. Accessibility and Universal Design Inclusivity is a key focus for D&D Technologies. Richard highlights the need for products that cater to an ageing population and people with diverse abilities. “Australia has an ageing population and so there’s increasing demand for hardware that caters to people of all ages and abilities,” he says. “Designs need to be mindful of people’s ability to grip or grasp a handle as well as the force needed to open or close a gate.” Future gate hardware designs will likely incorporate features such as ergonomic handles and levers, push-button or touch-sensitive controls, sensor-activated opening mechanisms, and adjustable operating force that can accommodate varying levels of strength.
